The Al Ahram Squash Event, a dramatic marquee event every year (if only because of its unique venue), is shaping up with some intriguing possibilities in 2000. On the men's side, Ahmed Barada, who always exceeds his ranking form on his "home court", has shown he is back in health and recently bested Jonathon Power in an exhibition match in Cairo. Canada's Jonathon Power has a lot to prove this year. The middle east, site of some of Power's most dramatic highs and lows, could be a momentum creating site for him this time. Coming off a disappointing spring of matchups with Peter Nicol, Power is looking to reassert to dominance of his offensive, creative style. For England's Simon Parke and Peter Marshall, this is another big chance to break through against the top three (Nicol, Barada, Power). On the women's side, Sarah Fitz-Gerald has re-entered the fray, declaring her knee fully healed. This will create a highly charged showdown between Fitz-Gerald, World #1 Cassie Campion, and world #3 Carol Owens; with British Open champion Leilani Joyce a dark horse.
