Brind Spoils Kawy's Hopes, Bailey stops Horner

The opening day's play in the AON Women's Texas Squash Open in Houston, USA, produced impressive upsets for two English players fighting back after layoffs.

Qualifier Tania Bailey, sidelined since late last year following knee surgery, claimed a 9-2 10-9 9-4 victory over seventh-seeded compatriot Suzanne Horner - and now meets the winner of another all-English first round clash, Linda Charman-Smith. The third seed also needed just three games to quash qualifier Vicky Botwright 9-1 10-8 9-0.

In the bottom half of the draw, unseeded US-based Natalie Pohrer fought back from 2-0 down to upset Australia's Rachael Grinham, the 6th seed, 5-9, 4-9, 9-2, 9-5, 9-1.

Family illness caused the former world No4 to take a sabbatical from the WISPA World Tour for the second half of last year, but since returning to competitive action in January Pohrer has lifted the Comcast Open title in Philadelphia. Pohrer now takes on an English opponent Fiona Geaves, the fourth seed who triumphed 9-4 9-3 7-9 9-4 over compatriot Rebecca Macree.

Egypt's Omneya Abdel Kawy, the 16-year-old from Cairo who claimed her career-first win over Malaysian junior rival Nicol David to qualify for the first round in Houston, put up a brave fight against England's 5th seed Stephanie Brind before going down 9-0 10-9 10-8.
