Pohrer and Bailey Battle on in Houston

Unseeded English players Tania Bailey and Natalie Pohrer caused upsets for the second successive day in the AON Women's Texas Squash Open when they removed the third and fourth seeds, respectively, in the quarter-finals in Houston, USA.

Pohrer's victory was the more emphatic as she crushed world No5 compatriot Fiona Geaves 9-2 9-0 9-1 in just 29 minutes.

"After such a display, the former South African now based in the USA but playing under the flag of her country of birth England, might well be nicknamed 'the Terminator' - but because of her triple nationality Natalie is now better known as 'the Emigrater'," said a Texas Open spokesman.

Pohrer now takes on top seed Carol Owens, the world No3 from New Zealand who stemmed a gutsy effort by England's fifth seed Stephanie Brind to win 9-1 9-5 9-4 in 49 minutes. Tania Bailey became the only qualifier to reach the last four when she toppled England team-mate Linda Charman-Smith, runner-up in last week's British National Championships, 9-7 4-9 9-1 9-1 in 66 minutes.

"Talk about a bad day at the office! If they could have given me $10 for every tin I hit, I would have had a real purseful for the shops tomorrow!" said the disconsolate Charman-Smith, who was perhaps a little jaded after the British Nationals having arrived home at 1.30am on the day she left for Houston just five hours later! Bailey will now face countrywoman Cassie Campion, the No2 seed and winner of last week's British National title, who cruised to a 9-5 9-5 9-2 win over Vanessa Atkinson, of the Netherlands, in 33 minutes.
