The Capella Swedish Open, which has attracted a surprisingly strong draw to frigid Linkoping Sweden due to a quiet January and February on the PSA schedule, gets underway Thursday. The draw features John White, Stewart Boswell, Ong Beng Hee, Simon Parke, Martin Heath, Joe Kneipp and Paul Price

Mika Monto struggled

The qualifier, in contrast, only drew 13 entrants. All the tour regulars advanced in first day action, largely against local players. Only Mika Monto had a tough time, barely surviving a five game battle against unknown Swedish player Anders Thoren.

Tomorrow's battles will include Andrew Whipp against Mika Monto, which after Monto's troubles today has to be ruled a tossup, Joey Barrington against heavily favored Rodney Durbach, and former junior colleagues James Willstrop and Peter Barker.
