In the opening round of qualifying play at Poughkeepsie NY on Tuesday, all of the American aspirants went down meekly in straight games. Julia Beaver, who lost to tour regular Christina Mak 9-4, 9-5, 9-5, put forth the best showing, while Dana Bett and Carlin Wing who are training in Holland went down rapidly to Eman El Amir and Dominique Lloyd-Walters while highly regarded American amaeturs Hope Prokop and Sara Wood suffered a similar fate. Shabana Khan from Seattle, the USA#3 woman player, has a place in the main draw by virtue of her WISPA ranking. But she faces formidable Egyptian Omneya Abdel Kawy in the first round. Qualifying play continues tomorrow and the first round begins Thursday. EMAN EL AMIR (EGY) (1) beat DANA BETTS (USA) 9-1 9-4 9-2
