Parke Withstand's Taylor's Surge

: $13,000 Squashworks PSA Open presented by Krispy Kreme Doughnuts

Simon Parke, who has struggled to return to form over the past year after a disabling foot injury, returned to the podium in patented fashion with a pair of five game wins in the semis yesterday and the finals today in Salt Lake City.

For the second day in a row, Simon Parke took a commanding two game lead only to have his opponent make a brilliant comeback. In the semifinals, it was Alex Gough who fought back only to lose 17-14 in the fifth. In the final, Nick Taylor also came back from two games down to push Parke to the limit.

Down 15-16 in the third game, Taylor hit two winning nicks to close out the game. The momentum of those two shots continued in the fourth game where Taylor was able to control, 15-12. Taylor started slow in the fifth game and Parke took advantage and raced to a 7-1 lead.

Taylor made a small surge to get within 5-9 but Parke closed out the game, the match, and the tournament from there by winning the next six points.

Parke reached a career high point in 1999-2000, when he won the US Open in late '99 with impressive back-to-back wins over Nicol and Power, then took Nicol to the last few points of the June 2000 Superseries Finals in a wonderful battle. Since that time he has been struggling to regain that magic, and the confidence-building win for him in Salt Lake City could be a crucial result for his as the 02-03 season gets underway.

RESULTS: Squashworks Open, Salt Lake City, USA

Simon Parke def Nick Taylor 15-6, 15-12, 16-17, 12-15, 15-5
