Advances in Tour-Opener Qualifier
PREVIEW
The popular WISPA informal "season opener", the Hurghada International,
began Sunday with qualifying action in Cairo, Egypt. This event, which
culminates at the dramatic Red-Sea venue of Hurghada, where the glass
tournament court is erected on the edge of the water, traditionally holds
its early rounds in Cairo.
With the tour
calendar becoming more crowded - notably two upcoming strong events in
Malaysia and Brunei on successive weeks - the field in Hurghada is somewhat
watered down.
It makes, however,
for an interesting draw. Egyptian favorite, Omneya Abdel Kawy, will need
to get past Dominique Lloyd Walter, surging Tegwen Malik, and always-tough
Carla Khan to reach the final.
On the other
half, Cairo-based Australian, world #2 Rachael Grinham will have to get
past, potentially, Scotland's Pamela Nimmo and Engy Kheirallah.
QUALIFYING,
DAY ONE
In first day qualifying action, England's Rebecca Botwright got past local
hopeful Shahenda Osama. The rest of the qualifying field is very crowded
with local hopefuls.
