Women's Trials Heat Up With Wins By Hall And Shebana Khan Louisa Hall and Shebana Khan are locked with Meredeth Quick in an intense three-way battle for the final two spots on the American women's team, one of whose three available positions is already certain to go to reigning and four-time National champion Latasha Khan, Shebana's younger sister. Both Hall and Shebana Khan took a big step towards fulfilling their mission in this evening's action, Shebana with a four-game win over Latasha (whom she also out-played in their match in the 2002 team trials in Seattle) and Hall with an extremely well played and competitive but still straight-game victory over Quick in the first of the head-to-head meetings among this trio in this weekend's round-robin format. Though both Hall and Quick displayed their considerable athleticism throughout their hour-long encounter, ultimately it was Hall's occasionally maligned but noticeably improving short game, particularly her tight forehand drop shot and beautifully angled working boasts, that spelled the difference in this match between 2003 Nationals semi-finalists who were prevented from facing each other in the third-place play-off when an early-tournament Quick family automobile accident on a slick Connecticut road resulted in concussions to both Mrs. Quick and Meredeth and forced her to withdraw. Quick and Hall had split their two matches in last year's team trials, with Quick's four-game win in their 5th/6th play-off match on the trials' last day giving her just enough points to claim the final team spot. This time, as noted, it was Hall who fired the opening salvo, though in the next two days both will still have to face Shebana Khan, who rallied from two games to one down in the semis of the Nationals to wind up winning in five. Shebana, who turned 35 this past Tuesday, is often under-estimated
by a squash community that has become skeptical of her staying power,
especially after her semi-final loss in the 2002 Nationals to Quick, but
as she proved once again both in this year's Nationals and in today's
win over her higher ranked sister, she is still a In the third and final match of tonight's session, Hope Prockop won in three games over Carlin Wing. MATCH RECAP
