Alex Gough dispatches Peter Nicol

Ong to Meet Gough in Final

Top seed and world no.1 Peter Nicol crashed out of this years Prince Grand Prix Finals to Welshman Alex Gough. Although this was not a PSA ranking event, the vulnerability that Nicol showed in failing to rally against familiar foe Alex Gough is not what Peter Nicol wanted to show his fellow pros nor his fans. At this level of the game, the psychological edge that the world's top players hold over their "next tier" of challengers provides them a crucial advantage in early round of tournament events. Nicol's regular competitors in the PSA circuit will now be saying to themselves, "If Gough can do it, we can do it to."

The pattern Nicol followed in this match was disturbingly similar to some recent losses he has suffered to Lee Beachill and Jonathon Power. Nicol started slowly and was down 3-10 in first game before he employed steady pressure to get on the verge at 13-14, but then lost the first game. Nicol easily controlled the next two games, and seemed to be about to close out the match. But Gough was the one to provide all the pressure on Nicol from there on out. In the fifth game, Nicol was uncharacteristically always trailing, chasing Gough.

In the other half of the draw, Ong Beng Hee seemed in grave trouble at two games down and 10-10 in third. Beng Hee showed his mental maturity, displaying extremely cool concentration under pressure and he relentlessly edged ahead as he forced Nick Matthew into more and more running until Matthew visibly tired.

In the women's draw, Cassie Campion (1) beat Jenny Tranfield (3) 3-0 10/9 9/5 9/3 in 37 minutes. Campion was up 7-2 in first. Then Tranfield charged back to gain the lead and game ball at 8/7 & 9/8. It seemed that Campion was going to produce one of her patented collapses. But Campion provided two key winners to take the first game and the momentum. Rebecca Macree (2) beat Pam Nimmo (4) 3-1 9/0 9/2 4/9 9/6 . Nimmo started very slowly but opened the door by winning game three and then had the momentum and a chance to move ahead at 4-4 in the fourth game before Macree closed the door..
