Canadian and French Highs In Windy City Open

Shahier Razik and Nick Matthew in a very close match. ©2003 Debra Tessier
Second seed Nick Matthew was the biggest casualty in the quarter-finals of the $15,000 Charter Consulting Windy City Squash Open as all the English interest was blown away in a single session in Chicago, USA.

Only days after reaching a career-high No 22 in the Dunlop PSA World Rankings, Yorkshireman Matthew slumped 8-15 15-3 17-15 13-15 15-13 to fifth-seeded
Canadian Shahier Razik.

Razik, the 25-year-old world No35 from Toronto, played with confidence and energy, getting to seemingly every shot. Though winning the first game, Matthew appeared frustrated and virtually gave up, handing the second game 15-3. Matthew came back with more determination in the third game. In a game featuring exceedingly lengthy rallies and great gets by both players, the players were neck and neck. It was apparent that the winner of that game would have the momentum and upper hand - and that's how it worked out.

The fourth and fifth games were each close, but Razik appeared increasingly calm and Matthew increasingly frustrated and Razik prevailed at the end of the fifth. He now meets fourth-seeded Frenchman Gregory Gaultier, who despatched Ireland's 8th seed Liam Kenny 15-12 15-8 15-7 - and is now one match away from his second successive Windy City Open final.

Gaultier's compatriot Renan Lavigne, the third seed, also reached the last
four with a resounding win - beating England's Tim Garner to earn a
semi-final clash with top seed Paul Price. The Australian needed four games
to overcome qualifier Mark Heather 15-7 15-17 15-9 15-8.
