In the most intriguing match of the US National Championships first
round, which quietly got underway Wednesday afternoon, teenager
Olivia Blatchford fully extended New York-based Dana Betts to five
games.
Blatchford, who exhibited dominant performance in her age group last weekend at the US Juniors, bulldozing through the girls U15 draw without the loss of a game, put in a much more meaningful performance in winning two games against a mature and experienced competitor.
In other women's action, the oldest Open division competitor, Hope Prockop of Groton, MA, was unforgiving in dismissing Dartmouth star Julia Drury without the loss of a game.
In SL Green Men's play, all of the favored players advanced.
