Jenny Tranfield

Samantha Teran, aspiring WISPA pro from Mexico made a strong statement on the North American continent, easily beating perennial USA international Shabana Khan in the first round of the Vassar Women's Open in Poughkeepsie Tuesday.

Teran, who has been paying her dues on the qualifying tourney circuit, broke into the main draw with a win over Princeton graduate Meredith Quick before her big win against Shabana Khan in the main draw. Teran now meets the Dutch international, Vanessa Atkinson.

In other action, Jenny Tranfield, who just received a PhD degree in the UK, resumed her tour play with a convincing first round win. The 26-year-old from Yorkshire, now based in Nottingham, is seeded sixth in the WISPA World Tour event in Poughkeepsie and beat Yorkshire county team-mate Jenny Duncalf 9-2 9-0 9-5. In the quarter-finals, Tranfield meets compatriot Rebecca Macree, the third seed who defeated Australia's Laura Keating 9-4 9-5 9-3.
