FIVE OF EIGHT QUALIFYING
SPOTS GO TO PAKISTAN, EGYPT Meanwhile, the luck of the draw left Australians John Williams and Dan Jensen to fight it out for one qualifying spot. Former top-ten player Dan Jensen upset Williams to take a place in the main draw --- his first appearance in the main draw of a major event since he took a tour sabbatical due to injury about two years ago. Domestic hopes for success in the $105,000 Bank Al-Falah Pakistan Open Squash Championship were raised in Lahore today (Thursday) when three Pakistanis survived the final qualifying round - two against the odds - to earn places in the first round alongside wild-carded compatriot and former champion Amjad Khan. The 2002 Pakistan Open, the richest PSA Tour event of the year to date, returns to the men's circuit after a two-year absence. England's world No1 Peter Nicol heads a star-studded field which includes all but two players in the world top twenty. Muhammad Ilyas, ranked 155 in the world and playing in his hometown, pulled off the biggest upset when he dismissed compatriot Shahid Zaman, the former national junior champion and world No33, 15-14 15-14 5-15 15-12 in 61 minutes. Aijaz Azmat also capitalised on a hometown advantage when he ousted Canadian Shahier Razik, the world No40 ranked 24 places higher, 15-8 12-15 15-10 15-12. Mansoor Zaman, son of former British Open champion Qamar Zaman and currently Pakistan's highest-ranked player, claimed his anticipated place in the main draw when his Egyptian opponent Mohamed Essam Hafiz retired with the score at 15-6 9-15 15-11 13-5 in the local player's favour. In the first round which begins on Friday (22nd March) Ilyas faces England's 8th seed Mark Chaloner while Azmat takes on sixteenth-seeded Englishman Del Harris. Zaman is drawn to meet Australia's British Open champion David Palmer, the second seed.
