Nicol Cruises To Opening Pakistan Win

England's top seed Peter Nicol comfortably overcame his first round opposition on the opening day of the $105,000 Bank Al-Falah Pakistan Open Squash Championship, the richest PSA Tour event of the year to date, to move into the second round in Lahore.

A star-studded field, boasting all but two of the world's top twenty players, is competing in the first Pakistan Open for two years - staged for the first time in the northern city of Lahore, on a brand new all-glass court erected in the Fortress Stadium.

The legendary Pakistani pair Jahangir Khan and Jansher Khan dominated the event for the first 18 years from 1980 - Jahangir claiming a record ten titles - and only in 1999 did the title first move into foreign hands following Englishman Peter Marshall's win. Nicol beat Canada's Graham Ryding, beaten finalist in 1998, 15-11 15-12 15-11 in 49 minutes.

The world champion and world No1, who recently celebrated his 50th PSA Tour final but has yet to appear in one in Pakistan, will now meet unseeded Finn Olli Tuominen, who needed four games to overcome Egypt's Mohamed Abbas 15-4 8-15 15-10 15-11.

Frenchman Thierry Lincou was the only other non-British player to survive the first round - fighting back from a game down to beat Joseph Kneipp 16-17, 15-1, 15-6 after the Australian failed to return to the court for the fourth game as a result of a hip injury.
