Tumble In Historic Pakistan Open
Egypt's Amr Shabana became the only qualifier to reach the quarter-finals of the $105,000 Bank Alfalah Pakistan Open Squash Championship, and did so by eliminating local hero Amjad Khan, the 1998 champion, to ensure that the 2002 final will not feature a Pakistani player for the first time in the event's history. It took Shabana four games to defeat the Peshawar-based Khan, nephew of six-times Pakistan Open champion Jansher Khan, 15-13, 15-11, 13-15, 15-4 before a partisan crowd at the Fortress Stadium in the heart of the city of Lahore. The 22-year-old world No37 from Cairo will now meet the winner of the second round match between Canada's third seed Jonathon Power and England left-hander Paul Johnson. The historic third day of action in the richest PSA Tour event of the year also produced a flurry of seeding upsets. France's fifth seed Thierry Lincou crashed out 13-15, 15-11, 15-8, 15-2 to Anthony Ricketts, the 15th seed. Lincou complained about the heat on court: "I don't know how I lost my energy after the first game and could not play although the heat was the same for both of us," Lincou told the DAWN. The Australian now comes up against top-seeded Englishman Peter Nicol, the world No1 and world champion looking for his first ever title win in Pakistan, who comfortably overcame Finland's Olli Tuominen 15-8, 15-6, 15-6. In the all-British clash between Scotland's Martin Heath and England's 8th seed Mark Chaloner, the Scot came back from a game down to upset Chaloner 7-15, 15-10, 15-12, 15-9. Heath now meets compatriot John White, who also ousted an Englishman with a 15-5, 15-12, 15-4 win over the circuit's oldest player Chris Walker. English success, however, came from the double British National champion Lee Beachill. The eleventh seed scored a notable triumph with a 15-7, 9-15, 17-15, 15-8 upset over the seventh-seeded Malaysian Ong Beng Hee. With David Palmer's routine victory over Del Harris, a terrific quarter final can now be anticipated between Palmer and Beachill. Lee Beachill, most recently victor over Peter Nicol in the British Nationals comes in with a lot of confidence over former no. 1 Palmer, who has had mixed results in recent months.
