Retain European Titles In Contrasting Styles
England successfully defended the men's and women's titles in the European
Team Squash Championships in Boblingen, Germany, but did so in contrasting
styles. Whist the women's team cruised to a 3-0 victory over sixth seeds
Scotland without conceding a single game, the men survived one of the
most dramatic finals on record, twice coming from behind to draw 2-2 against
second seeds France, and claim victory only after an 8-7 countback on
games.
England's women
are celebrating a remarkable unbeaten record in the European Championships
since 1978, while England's men clinched their tenth successive title
and the 27th since the inaugural men's competition in 1973.
The men's final
was the third in a row to feature England and France - and the underdogs
took an unexpected early lead when Jean-Michel Arcucci fought back from
2-0 down to overcome England's experienced former world No5 Del Harris
2-9 3-9 9-5 9-3 9-2. British champion Lee Beachill levelled the tie by
beating rising star Gregory Gaultier, a former European junior champion,
3-9 9-2 9-5 9-4. World No6 Thierry Lincou then restored France's lead
with a 9-4 9-5 10-9 win over Chris Walker in the battle between the two
number ones.
England's saviour
was world No8 Mark Chaloner, who won the first game 9-0, then vitally
defied a second game comeback by his opponent Renan Lavigne to claim the
decider 9-0 10-8 9-0 - and England victory on an 8-7 games countback.
Had Lavigne secured a single game, the final would have been decided on
points countback!
In the women's
final, Cassie Campion, Linda Charman-Smith and Stephanie Brind - all players
within the world's top eight - ended Scotland's hopes of success in their
first women's final with straight games wins over Pamela Nimmo, Senga
Macfie and Wendy Maitland, respectively.
