Power gets Expected win, Green gets first Title

Jonathon Power of Montreal won his fourth straight Canadian men’s squash title Saturday with a 9-4, 9-1, 9-2 victory of Graham Ryding of Toronto at the national championships while third-seed Margo Green of Halifax took the women’s crown. Power, who arrived in Calgary last Tuesday directly from Qatar where he won his second consecutive Masters tournament, needed to fight fatigue throughout the tournament.

"I haven’t had a day off in two weeks, it’s been non-stop," said Power, 27, currently ranked third in the world. "I was so tired at the start of the tournament but gradually it got better and better. Graham played some real tough squash today and kept the rallies long. The score is not reflective of how tough a match it was. I was glad to end it in three.

"This is one of only two tournaments I play in Canada and I want to win because it means a lot." Power returns home to Montreal and won’t compete again until the Super Series final, reserved for the top-eight in the world in mid-June in London. Shahir Razik of Toronto defeated Kelly Patrick of Edmonton in the third place match. Razik, the third-seed, lost to Ryding in five games in Friday’s semifinal.

In the women’s final, Green beat Carolyn Russell of Winnipeg 10-9, 9-6, 9-1 for her first career Canadian crown. Russell had upset two-time defending champion and top-seed Melanie Jans of Toronto in the semifinal.

"I just tried to be patient against Carolyn," said Green, who needed five games to win her semi over Lauren Wagner of Victoria. "I’m surprised to come through with the title. It hasn’t really sunk in yet." Jans defeated Wagner for third spot. The Commonwealth Games squash team is to be decided over the next few weeks and will be based on world rankings for the men and Canadian rankings for the women.
