Results from 2nd Round Qualification (Wednesday May 7th) at the 2003 Squashworks WISPA Open presented by Krispy Kreme and Watson Women's Health:

Alison Waters (ENG) defeated Vicky Lankester (ENG): 2-9, 9-2, 9-2, 4-9, 9-4.
Amelia Pittock (AUS) defeated Julia Beaver (USA): 9-3, 9-3, 9-1.
Samantha Teran (MEX) defeated Melissa Martin (AUS): 9-5, 9-3, 9-1.
Heidi Mather (AUS) defeated Meredith Quick (USA): 9-3, 9-3, 9-4.

The tournament continues Thursday May 8th from 6:00 PM until 9:00 PM with the main draw first round matches. Second seed Jenny Tranfield (ENG) has withdrawn due to illness. Tranfield's loss was a big break for qualifier Alison Waters because instead of having to play the world # 10 Tranfield she now gets "lucky loser" Meredeth Quick of the USA. Of the four qualification finalists, Quick was the one drawn to take Tranfield's place; thus, the term "lucky loser."

Thursday's Schedule:

5. Madeline Perry (IRL) vs.Qualifier Heidi Mather (AUS) @ 6:45 PM on court # 1.
4. Rebecca Chiu (HKG) vs.Lara Petera (NZL) @ 7:15 PM on Court # 1.

Qualifier Alison Waters (ENG) vs. Meredith Quick (USA) @ 8:15 PM on Court # 3.

In addition to the 2003 Squashworks WISPA Open matches, the U.S. players are playing a seperate U.S. Elite Challenger tournament sanctioned by the United States Squash Racquets Association (USSRA). There are six of the top U.S. professionals here in Salt Lake City for both the WISPA tournament and this U.S. Challenger. Results from this U.S. Challenger will be used to determine the three spots on the U.S. National Team which represents the U.S. in the Pan American Games. These spots are very prestigious and coveted. The U.S. players are really looking forward to this competition. Play in the U.S. Challenger also begins on Thursday May 8th with two New Yorkers: Julia Beaver vs. Carlin Wing @ 6:45 PM on Court # 2.
