Survives Barrington Marathon in Georgia
Welshman
Gavin Jones just barely claimed a place in the semi-finals of the
Atlanta Open Squash Championship in Georgia, USA. After over two hours
of play, it was Jones who was able to scrape together the last point,
surviving a five-game marathon match against England's Joey Barrington,
son of the legendary Jonah Barrington, which lasted more than two hours.
Barrington's father was master of the marathon match - being involved
in some of the most brutal battles in his time.
Jones, the 23-year-old third seed from Maesteg, took the
opening two games
before seventh-seeded Barrington surged back to level the match. The
Welshman led 14-11 in the fifth, but Barrington again fought back to level
14-14 all, then serve for the match! Jones recovered to take the initiative
and eventually wrapped up the match 15-8 15-11 6-15 12-15 17-16.
Jones now faces top seed Viktor Berg after the Canadian
beat England's Peter
Barker 15-6 15-11 15-12.
Ireland's
John Rooney becomes the only unseeded player to reach the last
four. The Nottingham-based player beat Kumail Mehmood when the Pakistan
qualifier retired after losing the first two games 15-8 15-8. Rooney faces
England's sixth seed Mark Heather, who beat Scott Fitzgerald of Wales
15-10
15-11 17-16.
