Crombie also Qualifies   [Complete Draw]

Christopher Gordon, one of America’s future hopes in World Squash, sent a firm message of intent to the rest of the players in the U.S.A. with a white wash of victories at this weekend’s Black Knight U.S. team playoffs at the newly opened San Diego Squash.

Matched up against Gordon were the cream of the U.S., Richard Chin, Beau River and Jamie Crombie, who won the other place in the squad by collecting 2 victories over the weekend. Crombie was Gordon’s toughest match, going the distance of 5 games but Gordon, at 18 the younger player by an astonishing 21 years, comfortably took the fifth 9-1 to win the group.

Gordon and Crombie will be joining The No.1 and No.2 ranked players, Micheal Puertas and Julian Illingworth, who had pre-qualified for the team (by accumulating enough points in the 5 selection events played this season) traveling to Rio, Brazil, for the Pan American Federation Cup this summer.

Between them the Third and fourth finishers, Richard Chin and Beau River, failed to get a game from Crombie or Gordon but finished their campaign head to head with a close five game match that River clinched.

The weekend at San Diego Squash also featured the Black Knight San Diego Squash Open 2005 with skill level events attracting players from as far a field as San Franscisco, Santa Barbara, Phoenix and the East Coast.

Opened Jan 1st, San Diego Squash is the dream of local businessman Greg Scherman and ex-world No.4 Chris Walker.

Chris, who is also the U.S. Men’s team coach, said, ”It was a great weekend for squash in San Diego. It gave a relatively new squash community the chance to see what top level squash is like, offering a great picture window to new players and a chance to spread the word!”
