Joshna Chinappa: Ambassador for Indian Health and Family Planning

The two finalists in the women’s world junior championships held in Belgium in August now find themselves in a  different sort of spotlight. The winner, Egypt’s Raneem El Weleily, is starring on SOTNA (“Our Voice”) a new children’s television program in which Egyptian children will produce and present   stories relevant to young people in Egypt.

Joshna Chinappa, the Indian junior champion, has been a made a Brand Ambassador for the Indian Ministry of Health and Family planning.  She is spearheading a national  “Save the Girl Child” campaign  which is trying to eradicate female foeticide (where parents only want male offspring) which still exists in some parts of the country.

Joshna is being used as a role model for other parents to give the same support to their daughters as they would theirs sons.

She was also selected by India Today Magazine  as one of the top 15 young achievers in India chosen from the diverse worlds of art, cinema, business and sport.

Raneem El Weleily supporting women's rights on the Egyptian program SOTNA

Reneem is seen on the pilot SOTNA program, introducing herself and showing the many squash trophies she has won, including that for being the world junior champion.

Sotna aims to offer Egyptian children and adolescents (aged 10-19 years) a space dedicated to dialogue and discussion about their rights. It will aim to establish itself as a key media forum for the dissemination and discussion of adolescent related topics, concerns and ideas, and as the center-piece for a multi-media enterprise including print, radio and online material.

In a broad sense, the project will learn lessons from the experiences of other countries where youth-specific media have been developed, often with UNICEF involvement. In addition, it will draw on other activities already undertaken by UNICEF Egypt, including digital video animation for children (the award-winning Rebellion of the Canes film); video documentaries such as "Life on the Edge" and "Voices of the Street ", and the BBC World Service Trust's "My Life" project supported by UNICEF.

The theme of the pilot will be sport, to tie in with the theme of this year's International Children's Day of Broadcasting . To see a portion of Raneem El Weleily’s contribution, log on to: www.sotna.com
