Weymuller Upset: Manetta Rallies To Defeat USA's Latasha Khan Trailing
two games to one after being wiped out 9-1 in the third game,
Italian standout Manuela Manetta responded with perhaps the
finest effort of her young WISPA career in the final two games,
using her excellent retrieving skills and improving touch to
get to 8-3 match-ball in the fifth against sixth seed and U.
S. national champion Latasha Khan and overcoming a bout of nerves
at that stage to hold on for a 9-7 3-9 1-9 9-7 9-6 victory
in Manetta will now face Annelize Naude, one of six seeds to win 3-0 last night, who played too well for Runa Reta to offer much resistance. The only other match to require a fourth game was Lauren Briggs's four-game win over Amelia Pittock, who won the first game handily (9-1) before Briggs started finding the range at the outset of the second game and controlled matters from there. The
remaining results were top seed Rachael Grinham over Nicolette Fernandes,
Sharon Wee over Chinatsu Matsui, Engy Kheirallah over Louise
Crome, second seed and 2004 Weymuller champion Natalie Grainger
over Suzie Pierrepont and Tricia Chuah over Meredeth Quick. Carol
