WEDNESDAY OCT 17, 2001 PROFESSIONAL WOMENS SQUASH RETURNS TO OTTAWA OCTOBER 25-28 OTTAWAFor the first time in over 10 years, the Womens International Squash Players Association (WISPA) is holding a tournament in Ottawa. The $7,000 Ottawa Womens International is scheduled for October 25-28 at the Queensview Club in Ottawa. There is a strong international field with players from England- the number-one ranked country in the sport, Pakistan, Italy and Ireland. All of the top-Canadian players are in the main draw including Pan Am Games and national champion Melanie Jans of Toronto, who is seeded second behind Irelands Madeline Perry, and local favorite Margo Green of Ottawa, the Panamerican championships gold medallist, seeded third. "Were hoping this tournament can grow in the next few years," said tournament director Heather Wallace of Ottawa, who won a record 11 straight Canadian titles from 1987-1997and was ranked as high as third in the world in 1986 for Scotland and sixth in 1992 for Canada. "We already have a very good field this year. Weve been affected slightly by the September 11 tragedy with a couple of girls deciding not to travel to North America." Wallace said the tournament was made possible by the combined sponsorship of OConnors Irish Pub and Dennys restaurant. WISPA currently holds three other events in Canada: in Toronto, Vancouver and Regina. First round action gets underway at 6 p.m. Thursday October 25, quarterfinals are Friday October 26 at 6 p.m., semifinals Saturday October 27 at 3:30 p.m. and the final Sunday October 28 at 1 p.m. Rogers 22 will carry the final live.
