BAIZLEY LAYS DOWN THE LAW AT OTTAWA INTERNATIONAL SQUASH TOURNAMENT OTTAWAA recent move to train in Europe appears to be helping Winnipegs Marnie Baizley as she upset fourth-seeded Kate Allison of England in a thrilling five game quarter final match 9-1, 3-9, 7-9, 9-6, 9-7 Friday at the $7,000 Ottawa Womens International squash tournament.
Two other Canadians, Melanie Jans of Toronto and Margo Green of Ottawa, also won their quarterfinals to assure a Canadian presence in Sundays final. Baizley, seeded eighth, squandered a 4-1 lead to lose the third game and lost a 6-3 advantage in the fifth game. But she held on against Allison who fell apart in the dying moments of the hour-long match.
"This is the first tournament in awhile that Ive felt prepared," said Baizley, who took a leave of absence from law school and moved to Liz Irving's Academy in Amsterdam in September to improve her game.
"I hadnt seen Kate play in a long time so I wasnt sure what to expect. In the fifth game getting the lead early really helped me in the end."
Jans, seeded second, defeated Carla Khan of Pakistan 9-3, 9-4, 9-5 while Green, seeded third, took Lauren Briggs of England 9-6, 8-10, 9-2, 9-0. Top-seeded Madeline Perry of Ireland defeated Sonia Pasteris of Italy 9-0, 9-3, 9-3. Perry will face Baizley in one semi while Jans and Green square-off in the other. The semis start at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the Queensview Club.
