Squash Achieves Inclusion In 2003 Pan American Games

Squash will be featured in the 2003 Pan American Games in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic. The decision was made at the recent AGM of the Pan American Sports Organisation (PASO) in El Salvador.

"We still have much work ahead of us to support and encourage the Squash Association of Dominican Republic, but the major challenge of inclusion in the Games has been met," said Sergio Rodriguez and Craig Brand, President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Federacion Panamericana de Squash (FPS).

Squash was included in the Pan American Games in Mar del Plata in Argentina in 1995 and in Winnipeg, Canada, in 1999 - but its position for 2003 seemed under threat as PASO was planning to restrict sports to those on the programme of the Olympic Games.

"This decision is excellent news for our sport, and a great tribute not only to Sergio Rodriguez and Craig Brand of FPS, but to the intervention of our President Susie Simcock who boosted the presentation for squash at the PASO General Assembly earlier in the year, when she was the only International Federation President in attendance," said Ted Wallbutton, Chief Executive of the World Squash Federation (WSF).

The Canadian Men's and Women's teams have dominated the medal stand at the Pan Am Games the past two Games. The 2003 date will give the USA teams an opportunity to test their ability to progress toward "world class" status.
