10.20.00 Birmingam, from Sarah Fitz-Gerald:

BAILEY CRUSHES WORLD CHAMPION CAMPION England's world champion Cassie Campion suffered her second setback in just over a week when she was beaten in straight games by compatriot Tania Bailey, the former world junior champion, in the quarter-finals of the $36,000 Women's Carol Weymuller Open in New York.

Bailey, 21, from Stamford in Lincolnshire, is the fastest-improving player on the WISPA World Tour, now boasting a career-high No. 8 world ranking. Her 9-3 9-4 9-0 victory over Campion - who is reported to still have signs of the effects of the 'dead leg' which caused her shock second round exit from last week's British Open - takes her into a semi-final against world No 4 compatriot Linda Charman.

Charman, from Hailsham in Sussex, cruised to a 9-2 9-4 9-4 win over Sabine Schoene, Germany's world No7 who is still fighting back to full fitness after picking up a virus in Australia. The semi-final in the bottom half of the draw will feature the fourth meeting in two months between New Zealand's British Open champion Leilani Joyce and Australia's world No3 Carol Owens.

Joyce, the world No2 from Hamilton who successfully defended her British Open title last week without conceding a game, dropped her first game in New York when she ended Dutch 'giant-killer' Vanessa Atkinson's run with a 9-5 9-3 9-10 9-5 quarter-final win. Third seed Owens, now based in New Zealand, defeated England's US-based fifth seed Natalie Grainger 9-3 9-4 9-2.

Campion's loss has personal significance to her. The Weymuller Open was the site of Campion's first significant WISPA win in the early '90s.
