WISPA Corona Telcel Mexico Open 2000

[Main draw]

Samantha Teran from Mexico down Wendy Maitland in First Surprise

The Corona Telcel Mexican Open was a huge success on day one with local player and Mexican #1 Samantha Teran, producing an upset by defeating the tournaments 7th seed Wendy Maitland of Scotland.

The event is staged on the glass court at the Plaza Inn shopping mall with a vocal partisan crowd supporting the Mexican girls. Rachael Grinham and myself are seeded to reach the final, but we expect strong opposition from Janie Thacker and Vicky Botwright of England.

All other matches went according to seeding today with the internationally seeded girls being too strong for the locals and other international players, using their matches as an opportunity to warm-up and adjust to the court conditions and altitude.

Tomorrow at 19.00 I will play Mexican #1 Samantha Teran. I believe I will be too experienced and strong for my opponent, but I look forward to the opportunity of playing again on the glass court before moving into the later rounds.

Rachael Grinham (1) defeated Marisela Castillo 9/1 9/1 9/2

Devoy won the match and retired that same day.
