Sarah Fitz-Gerald overcomes Rachel Grinham to win 5th straight tourney

By Sarah Fitz-Gerald, reporting from Mexico City 4/30/2000.

WISPA Corona Telcel Mexico Open 2000

[completed draw]

Sarah makes it five straight, 26 straight matches, but not before a battle

The Corona Tercel Mexican Open final was a great way for the tournament to finish. Rachael Grinham played the best squash of her career today pushing me to the limit before I snatched the first game 9/7. I managed to take control to lead 5-2 in the second before Rachael equalled the score with some excellent delayed length drives. We decided to change the ball at 6-6 as it was not performing properly, which worked to my advantage and I sealed it 9/6. The third game came allot more smoothly for me, as I was able to generate the pace I required and put Rachael on the back foot winning 9/2. Today I have won my 5th WISPA World Tour title which will help improve my ranking and move me further up the ranking list and closer to my goal of number 1. Next tournament is the Dallas Open.

FINALS:

Sarah Fitz-Gerald (2) def Rachel Grinham (1) 9-7, 9-6, 9-2

SEMI FINAL RESULTS SATURDAY:

Rachael Grinham defeated Janie Thacker 8/10 9/2 8/10 9/6 9/7
Sarah Fitz-Gerald defeated Vicky Botwright 9/0 9/49/2

Jean Delierre has made available a video of the 1992 Women's World Open final between legendary Susan Devoy and (at the time) up coming Michelle Martin. Devoy won the match and retired that same day.
