Holland's Tommy Berden Steals Australian Men's Open

Sarah Fitz-Gerald Overpowers light Women's Field
Tommy Berden, the young world number 33 player from Holland, stole away with the Australia Men's Open for 2001. Australia, which boasts the world's #4, 5 and 15th ranked players, saw Berden vanquish world #26 Anthony Ricketts from Australia in five games in the finals. Ricketts had ousted world #4 Paul Price in a five game semi final, while Berden had ousted world #15 Stewart Boswell, also in five games.

Australia's world #5, David Palmer, had ducked this event, as had world #22 John Williams and world #24 Joseph Kneipp.

Sarah Fitz-Gerald, the effervescent world #3 and reigning British Open Champion, continued her policy of taking on all comers in every available events, in this case totally dominating the field as she easily bested Natalie Grinham 3-0 in the finals. Her natural rivals, Carol Owens from Australia and Leilani Joyce from New Zealand both skipped the event.
