CANADIAN DELIERRE UPSETS ASHOUR FOR QUARTER-FINAL BERTH

Top seed Kareem Darwish became the only Egyptian to reach the quarter-finals of the World Junior Men's Squash Championships in Italy today (Wednesday 19 July) when compatriot Hisham Ashour, seeded to reach the last eight, was beaten 9-1 9-7 9-6 by Canada's Shawn Delierre in a 38-minute fifth round upset at the Vico Club in Milan.

Delierre, only the second Canadian to reach this stage of the competition since world No2 Jonathon Power made the final in 1992, now faces England's James Willstrop, the 16-year-old European Junior Championships' runner-up from Pontefract in Yorkshire. The 4th seed took just 26 minutes to overcome Spain's Borja Golan 9-3 9-1 9-1. Phillip Barker ensured England's status as the only country to be represented by more than one player in the last eight following a 45-minute 9-5 9-5 9-3 win over Pakistan's unseeded Arshad Barki.

The 18-year-old from Upminster in Essex now faces his younger brother Peter's 4th round conqueror Kareem Darwish, the event favourite from Cairo who beat Welshman Scott Fitzgerald 9-1 9-5 9-0 in 30 minutes. Second seed Gregory Gaultier became France's first ever world junior championships' quarter-finalist when he ended Australian Simon Carruthers' unseeded run in the event with a 9-4 9-6 10-9 victory in 41 minutes.

Gaultier now faces Malaysia's Mohamed Azlan Iskandar who needed 45 minutes to conquer England's Alister Walker 9-4 9-7 9-4. The other quarter-final will feature Pakistan's national junior champion Shahid Zaman and Spain's national senior champion Alberto Manso. Both beat Egyptians in four games - the former taking 28 minutes to topple Akram Youssif 9-0 9-3 5-9 9-3 and the latter requiring 57 minutes to overcome Mahmoud Abdelkader 9-4 4-9 9-5 9-5.
