Ahmed Barada back on court? By Martin Bronstein in London and Golestan Radwan in Cairo. May 21 2001 Egyptian squash star Ahmed Barada is no longer to be married. In January of this year he got engaged to Anne, the sister of Marwan, his brother-in-law, and daughter of a manager of a reasonably large furniture manufacturer, so they're fairly rich. It has now been confirmed that the engagement has been called off, with no reasons given for the breakup. As for Barada's position regarding his squash career, nobody knows whether he has actually retired or not. There are rumours, though, that arrangements are being made for Hesham El Attar, his long-time coach and trusted mentor, to come back, but again nothing has been confirmed. According to Barada's English manager, Barada is now answering his phone and talking to people normally. He even appeared on Egyptian Television a couple of weeks ago. So there are signs he is coming out of his self-imposed exile. One thing is sure, Barada's, the former world number three, is going to miss Egypt's planned match against England in August, in the preparations for the World Open. The announced reason for his absence is injury, as usual, but no further details are given. However, his name is on the list of players for the Egyptian team's pre-championships preparations, together with Omar El Borolossy, Karim Darwish, Amr Shabana, Mohamed Abbas, Mohamed Essam Hafiz, Mohamed Medhat, Morsi, Wael El-Hindi, and Ahmed Faizy. Whether he will actually participate in the championships in Melbourne in October is still doubtful. |
