Finals report from PSA/WISPA:

The fairytale run by Malaysian schoolgirl Nicol David before a home crowd in the Kuala Lumpur Squash Open came to a disappointing end when she was beaten 9/0 9/2 9/5 by Australia's top seed Carol Owens in the final.

David, at 15 almost half the age of the world No. 10 from Melbourne, was a qualifier in the new WISPA and PSA World Tour event. After removing veteran world No. 17 Australian Liz Irving in the first round, she bravely fought back from 2-0 down in the semi-finals to conquer 2nd seed Vanessa Atkinson 4/9 1/9 10/8 9/7 9/2.

In the final, the remarkable youngster from Penang - who is likely to be one of the favourites in the Women's World Junior Championships in Belgium later this month - was unable to match the experience of the favourite Carol Owens, who took the title without conceding a game throughout the event.

The men's event produced an unexpected and unseeded all-Malaysian final after Kuala Lumpur-based world junior champion Ong Beng Hee overcame English qualifier Peter Genever in four close games in the top half semi-final, and compatriot Kenneth Low benefited from a walkover after the withdrawal of Egypt's 2nd seed Amir Wagih in the other half.

In the final, Low, 23, and also from KL, beat his higher-ranked opponent 11/15 15/6 15/13 1/15 15/8 to gain his revenge for his loss to Ong in the final of the Milo Open in their hometown in April. Quarter-finals report from PSA/WISPA: Malaysian schoolgirl Nicol David, a qualifier, claimed the biggest squash scalp of her life when she beat 3rd seed Liz Irving, the world No. 17, 9/7 9/7 6/9 9/7 in the first round of the Kuala Lumpur Open in Malaysia. The remarkable 15-year-old from Penang, less than half the age of the former world No. 2 from Australia, is the Asian junior and senior champion and Asian Games champion. David then dismissed compatriot Siu Lynn Leong in straight games to reach the semi-finals where she meets Dutch No. 2 seed Vanessa Atkinson, the world No. 18.

In the men's event, only the top two seeds survived the first round, before Malaysia's world junior champion Ong Beng Hee fought back from 2-0 down in today's quarter-finals to dismiss Australia's No. 1 seed Billy Haddrell 10/15 5/15 15/12 15/12 15/13. Ong now meets England's Peter Genever, the only qualifier to reach the last four, while the other semi-final features Malaysia's Kenneth Low against Egypt's second seed Amir Wagih.
