Stephen Meads: Experienced world tour player.

(information updated on 04/06/2000)
England's Stephen Meads was the first player to join the Dunlop PSA stable following the launch of Dunlop as the "Official Racket of the PSA" in 1998.

Within the first year of this association, the 29-year-old from Wokingham in Berkshire claimed four PSA titles with his Dunlop Revelation Pro Titanium racket - ending a four-year gap since his previous PSA event success!

Meads first turned professional in 1988, making his first appearance in the PSA World Rankings at 187 in November. Six months later he was inside the top 100, and in January 1991 broke into the top 50 at 48. Mid-1992 saw his elevation to the top thirty - and in November 1993 he moved into the top twenty, eventually reaching his career-best world No11 position in November 1995.

It was in 1986 that his talent first broke through, when he won the British Junior U-16 Open title in January. Two years later he reached the semi-finals of the World Junior Open in Scotland.

He claimed his first PSA Tour title in August 1994 when he won the Aktiv Masters in Germany. In January the following year he won the prestigious British National Championships title and two months later achieved his best ever success in the British Open, reaching the quarter-finals.

In 1995 he reached the last four of the Singapore and Malaysian Opens - in the former beating Ahmed Barada of Egypt in the quarter-finals, and in the latter overcoming Australian Dan Jenson.

His Dunlop success in 1998 began in the USA where he won the Missouri Athletic Club Open only days after first playing with his new Dunlop racket.

In October he won the Grass-hopper Cup title in Switzerland, after fighting back from 2-0 down in the final to beat France's highest ever ranked player Thierry Lincou.

Meads maintained this success through into 1999 when he won two titles in succession - the Midlands Open in England and the Windy City Open in Chicago, USA.

"I'm enjoying my squash more now than ever before," said Meads after reaching the semi-finals of the Austrian Open earlier this year.

Now married to Kate, and the proud father of daughter Jessica, born in April 99, Steve turns 30 this year and can look back at a successful and enjoyable decade as a touring squash pro.

"Amazingly, there are only five of us left who were PSA members when I joined," added Meads. "I am sure, however, that I will be playing for a good few more years yet!"

Currently ranked 14 in England and 32 in the world, Meads is preparing for next month's Italian Open while also hoping to lead UniS Guildford, his SRA National League team, and Moonrakers Salisbury, his British Superleague team, into their respective end-of-season play-offs.
