Woodruff Nee Tournament (Feb 19-21, 1999) University Club, Washington DC USA
Hardball and Softball Masters Event in Washington DC The Hardball match of the
tournament was the 50+ finals between John Frazier and Walt Smedley -- two best friends who have been squash
opponents for at least thirty years. The bullish, British hardserving Smedley was leading the match 2-1 against
his calm, poker-faced "blood-brother" opponent Frazier. Smedley fought his hardest, banging around the court,
bloodied at the knees, blood on court, a swollen knot on his left temple; Frazier, showing no cards, calmly and
precisely stroking his way through the match to a 3-2 victory, 15-13 in the fifth. It was a classic struggle.
Also, in the 60+ finals, Bruce Elfenbein tield up his match at two all, against Lucky Young, only to lose in
the fifth game -- but a great effort on Elfenbein's part.
