All higher seeded players advanced into the quarterfinals of the European Individuals this morning at Royan France. The European Individuals round of 16 had no major upsets, and only a few close matches. The biggest surprise was Nick Matthew’s hard-fought five set win against France’s Julien Balbo, who is currently ranked #75. The Englishman expanded some unnecessary energy but never seemed in danger of losing the match as Balbo finally wilted mid-way through the fifth set.

England’s Adrian Grant also had a surprise five setter against France’s Romain Tenant as the Frenchman jumped out to a 2 set to 1 lead. The effort had clearly exhausted him, however, and by the end of the match Tenant was practically sleep-walking as Grant finished him off 9-0, 9-0.

Perhaps lacking the encouragement of home court advantage, none of the other underdogs managed more than a set. Hungary’s Mark Krasclak lost in four to Renan Lavigne, while Thierry Lincou, Gregory Gaultier, Bora Golan and Laurens Jan Anjema won in straight sets.

In the women’s draw Daniela Schumann held her own against the Netherland’s Olga Noom, but the imposing Dutchwoman proved to strong, and Schumann lost in four sets.

The top two seeds, Tania Bailey and Jenny Duncalf sailed onwards.
