Carlin Wing's vision of the global community of squash on display in South Boston

On a foggy, rainy Friday night in the gallery district of South Boston, a beaming Carlin Wing, photographer, art teacher and retired WISPA tour player, unveiled a solo multimedia gallery show, at the Anthony Greaney gallery on Harrison Street.

The cornerpieces of the photography exhibit are three oversized prints that capture the juxtaposition of athleticism and capitalism that is the Tournament of Champions in Grand Central terminal.

The focus of the exhibition are the global reaches of squash, with what she calls "deteriorated webgrabs" representing some of the most famous venues of squash - from the pyramids at Giza to the Town Square in Seoul Korea, and many places in-between from Canary Wharf to Lahore. This group of 14 prints are derived from original photographs published on the web by Debra Tessier (SquashTalk), Stephen Line, Jos Aarts and Andrew Shelley.

The counterpoint to these photos and images is an eclectic video product that at the same time acts as a center of attention and an expanation of the exhibition.

Carlin says, "It's all about the global community and how that's reflected in squash ... being global but also being local."

The freeform video alternates between presenting the global message and bringing Carlin's personal experience into the picture, and then devolves into an unusual "outside the box" travelogue of Carlin and friends hitting a squash ball against buidings in a variety of undefined settings.

All quite varied, but the combination of all the forms works. The exhibition in its entirety works well, and would be just as appropriate in the nearby DeCordova Art Museum, as it is in this gallery.

This presentation of squash in a global community makes you think.

I'm glad I took the time to experience the exhibition at its opening tonight.
