Princeton NJ. Dec 15, 2001, by Ron Beck

The USSRA Junior Olympics, got underway today in Princeton NJ, as the record 457 entrants, 118 of them hailing from international destinations, effortlessly piled into the large Princeton University venue.

The events feature 128-player draws in many of the categories. Consequently first round action started at 8AM and didn't conclude until after 9PM. As many of the top seeds, Canadian, South African, Pakistani, and Latin American players, coasted through first round encounters, play of a horde of unseeded American players confirmed across-the-board skill, fitness, and tactical level improvements among the USA junior programs.

The event draws the coaching elite, who are largely responsible for the increasing levels of participation and performance among juniors. These range from Richard and Pat Millman from Westchester Squash, Ken Hiscoe, currently from Cincinatti, Bryan Patterson and Kate Major from Philadelphia, Richard Chin from New York, Mark Devoy from Brooklyn, and many more, too numerous to mention.

First round action in the Girls draws

Moises Galvez (photo right), a study in fluidity of motion and artistry with the racquet, breezed into town and effortlessly dispensed with a tough opponent, Calgary's Wes Chan, in round one, 9-0, 9-0, 9-0. He will face up against USA's best, Julian Illingworth, who sailed through his first round with Brian Rifkin, 9-0, 9-0, 9-3, as well as top entrants from South Africa such as Jonathan Kleynhans, and other luminaries such as Eduardo Aguilar, Harvard's Gavin Cumberbatch, and Canada's Greg Hutner.

The ladies U19 draw is equally intriguing with Diana Huerta from Mexico seeded to play Canada's Ruchika Kumar in one semi, while Nicolette Fernandes from Guyana seeded to meet Amy Gross from the USA in the other semi final.

Today will see several rounds in the feed-in consolation taking place, with the next rounds in the main draw after lunch.

The extensive and intensive feed-in consolation plays down to the #5 finishing player in each division and extends through Monday.

The semis and finals of the main draw also go through Monday afternoon.
