Dec 16, 2001, by Ron Beck [all results in main and consolation draws] Saturday Morning saw heavy action in the feed-in consolation rounds, with first round consolation entrants playing three matches to advance. In the main draws, one round of play was completed in each flight. Play Saturday began at 8AM and concluded only at 10 PM.
Among the many highlights of the day, were two great contests in the Mens Under 17 draw. Local player Tim Callahan, son of the Princeton Men's coach Bob Callahan, battled Mexican standout Mauricio Garcia. Their battle on the far right court, attracted the biggest crowd of the day as Garcia took a 2-1 lead. In the fourth game both players picked up the pace and attacked each other point for point, with neither able to gain an advantage. Callahan battled back from match ball to at 8-7 in Garcia's favor, to even it at 8-8. He then took the ninth point to get game ball, but Garcia returned the favor, tying the game at 9-9 and earning another match ball. Each point was over 20 rallies at this point, as the two young contestants played virtually error-free ball. And Callahan, moving Garcia frequently up front with the attacking boast, regained the serve and took the fourth 10-9. He got home in the anticlimatic fifth game, 9-1. On the Women's U17 side, Radhika Ahuwalia from Canada and Christina Fast from Rye NY staged an intriguing and exciting contest, with Fast's hard-hitting contrasting with Ahuwalia's patient racquet work and positional play. Fast came back from a one game deficit to tie the match with a 9-2 second game win earned with her power and hard drives to the front. Ahuwalia came back from the second with increased patience and heightened concentration and just barely emerged on top, winning the next two 10-8 and 9-7. The ladies U17 draw overall saw 6 of the eight quarter finalists hailing from Canada, which is not a good sign for the U17 USA class seeking to be the successors to the great USA Girls under 19 squash of last summer. In the Mens and Women's U19 flights, seeds avanced as expected.
