Crowd Quarterfinals with Four of Eight Positions
With four players through to the quarter-finals
- three of whom against the
seeding - Pakistan is continuing to dominate the Men's World Junior
Individual Squash Championship in India. Further progress in the
event,
which moved today (Friday) onto the ASB all-glass court in the Tamil
Nadu
Squash Academy in Chennai, could result in an all-Pakistani semi-final
line-up!
England's top two seeds both survived their fourth
round matches relatively
untroubled - favourite James Willstrop started slowly against Shah
Nawaz, but
once he had secured the first game 9-6 he stepped up into full attack
mode
and swept through the next two with ease to win 9-6 9-3 9-0 in 27
minutes and
cause the only Pakistani demise of the day.
At the other end of the draw, No2 seed Peter Barker
was last on court against
the only remaining home player. India's talented Siddarth Suchde
was not to
be intimidated by his experienced opponent and, with great encouragement
from the home crowd, made Barker concentrate and work hard to achieve
his 9-4 9-4 9-1 victory in 49 minutes.
Pakistan's Khayal Muhammad took on the USA No1 Julian
Illingworth - the third
round conqueror of third-seeded Moustafa Essam - and, although the
match
lasted nearly an hour, the American's brave run was brought to an
end in 53
minutes in a 9-3 9-3 9-5 scoreline.
Safeerullah
Khan pulled off the first Pakistani seeding upset when he dismissed
Dutchman Dylan Bennett in straight games. Seeded to reach the last
eight, Bennett arrived in Chennai with three European Junior Circuit
titles under his belt, but was no match for the Pakistan No2 junior
who won 9-6 9-7 9-3 in 39 minutes.
Fourth seed Majid Khan claimed Pakistan's only expected
fourth round win, but
the victory over unseeded Jon Harford was achieved when the Englishman,
who
took the opening game, conceded the match after the third 7-9 9-1
9-0 having
injured his hamstring.
Mexico's
Eric Galvez showed himself to be a promising talent when he comprehensively
demolished Australia's No1 Aaron Frankcomb 9-1 9-2 9-0 in
just 34 minutes. "Full of flair and imagination, Galvez is
fast around the court and very exciting to watch," said a spokesman
for the Championship. "The top seeds will have to be very wary
of him."
Kuwaiti
Bader Hussaini's good run came to a fairly quick end at the hand
of
Jhie Gough from Australia, but he was Australia's only player to
progress as
Luke Margan lost a long and very physical match against Pakistan's
Khalid
Atlas, despite leading 1-0 and 2-1.
