Gordon, Lorentzen Strike Out While Park,Lange and Blatchford go the distance.

Dec 20 2004 - The US Junior Open drew to a climax this afternoon in icy New Haven Connecticut. While winter storms blew up and down the east coast, two highly heralded Americans, making their last appearances as Juniors in this event, fell short in the final test.

Christopher Gordon, the precocious American junior who has been a regular on the PSA satellite circuit for the past six months, has also been battling a painful bone spur in the foot for the last four weeks, and he fell short to a highly talented and exciting Colombian player, Miguel Rodriguez, in four games.

With the score standing 1-1 in games, the two battled toe-to-toe in the third game, but Rodriguez variety won out over Gordon's steady play, as Rodriguez took the third 10-8. In an indication that his foot was not fully healed, Gordon then fell quickly in the fourth 9-0.

Lily Lorentzen, the two-times US Junior champ from Greenwich CT, who has taken a gap-year before entering Harvard, to test the waters in the WISPA world of play, fell disappointingly to seasoned English junior Jenna Gates. The match was very much a battle of equals, and the result should give Lorentzen good reason for optimism as she tests her skills against the worlds best over the next few months.

Three other girls flights went to Americans, with the New Yorker Emily Park having an easy time in the Girls Under 15 flight. Park if anything is more impressive each time we see her play - her poise, skills and general love of the game speak well for her future in squash.

The Girls Under 17s went to Kirstin Lange, another product of the vaunted Washington state junior programs that have brought us stars ranging from Mark Alger to Latasha Khan. For complete results, see the links below.

The Girls Under 13s went to the New York based phenom, Olivia Blatchford, who constructed a dominating performance over a very strong finalist, Seattle based Vidja Rajan, from the same above mentioned Washington program.
