Dec 5 2000. On the YMG Capital Classic Event in Toronto...

I would like to comment on the YMG Tournament and my view on the play and results.

This was my first opportunity to be present at a top level professional squash tournament. I watched to Quarters, Semis and Final. The best match was the semi final with Barada and Nicol. I have seen many videos of Nicol, Barada and Power.

With Nicol coming off a recent injury, I felt he was not in top condition after the first 2 games of the match and it took a tremendous effort on Nicol's part to pull off the win with many energy regrouping pauses before his serves, and a gutsy resolve to win.

His fine choice of attacking /deceptive strokes finally won the match. This match reminded me of the victory of Geoff Hunt over a young Jahangier Khan in their stupendous match at the '81 British Open. I spoke to Nicol after the match and asked him if he was tired. He replied that it was hot on the court but he felt fine.

I was disappointed in the Finals as it became evident that Nicol was not really in Tournament condition and that his match with Barada had drained him of any hope of winning against Power. I would have liked to have seen Barada in the Final against Power.

As I mentioned, this was the first live Professional Squash Tournament I have been to and I would recommend that any Squash fan who has not had the opportunity to see this top level of play live, to make the effort to take in any PSA tournament. - Jack B.Hoffman
