Dec 19 2000. On the USSRA Junior Olympics Coverage...

Dear editor:

Your coverage of events such as the Junior Olympics is generally terrific--very timely, great pics, etc.

The comments, regarding the seeding of certain players, however, seems gratuitous at best, particularly at a tournament of this size and scope.

As one example, take Ruchika Kumar. We asked for and got, direct input from Squash Canada on their players. She was seeded third out of the U19 Canadian girls who entered. The second Canadian was seeded seventh, based on good information from last summer's Pan Am games as well as last year's results. As only eight girls were seeded, it is hard to see where the mistake was made. Second, her win at the Canadian the previous week both went against the seeds there and came, in any event, after seeds and the draw had already been made for the Junior Olympics.

The case for Dylan Bennett is a better one. Nonetheless, if you look at the finals (even toss in the semis!) of all eight divisions, I think you'd agree that the USSRA did a pretty good job for what we believe is now the second largest junior tournament in the world. Dear Paul: Thanks for the good explanation. It would have been helpful for our coverage if you would have been able to provide such info in advance. - editor
