Dear Editor, You don't have to look to all the way to professional tennis for a system to deal with the problem of pro squash players returning to competition after lengthy absence due to injury. In 2002 WISPA introduced the concept of a "Pegged Ranking" to deal with what The TeamKneipp column calls the "Stewart Boswell Factor." Per the WISPA manual, the Pegged Ranking (PR) rationale is summarized as follows: "A member who has not competed for a minimum of 6 months, but no more than 18 months may be eligible to utilise a Pegged Ranking (PR) for event placement purposes based upon their ranking when they ceased competing. This elevated ranking will enable them to be placed in event entry lists higher than their Actual Ranking (AR) at the time and so be placed in qualification or main draw at a level closer to their actual ranking at the point at which they stopped competing. This benefits the returning player and other event entrants." Pegged rankings are available to WISPA members for medical or other related situations as approved by the Board and may be used for up to 5 months upon a player's return to competition.
