GARNER GRABS EARLY GLORY IN MACAU

English qualifier Tim Garner claimed the early glory in the $59,000 Macau Squash Open when he crushed Canada's third seed Graham Ryding 15-10 15-13 15-12 in what he described as "my second best win ever!"

In the Women's draw, top seeds Leilani Joyce and Carol Owens expect to face-off for #2 bragging rights, in the absence of world #1 Sarah Fitz-Gerald, who is taking a week off after winning the World Open in Melbourne. To reach the finals, Owens will have to beat Malaysia phenom Nicol David while Leilani Joyce will need to top rapidly improving Stephanie Brind. All four had routine first round wins today.

Garner, the London-based world No50 from Sussex had earlier qualified for the first round by beating his younger brother Ben Garner - on the fifth occasion that the pair had been drawn to face each other on the PSA Tour since July 2000! Garner the elder now takes on fellow qualifier Dan Jenson for a place in the last four - after the former world number-five-ranked Australian squeezed past England's 8th seed Stephen Meads 10-15 15-14 13-15 15-14 15-11 in two hours and fifteen minutes!

Top-seeded Malaysian Ong Beng Hee had a lucky first round escape, fighting back from 2-1 down and 10-10 in the fourth to beat England's Mark Cairns 8-15 15-3 12-15 15-10 15-3. In the women's event, England's new world No4 Stephanie Brind, the 3rd seed, was taken to four games before beating Hong Kong's Christina Mak 9-3 9-7 3-9 9-1.
