CANADIANS WIN CONSOLATION MATCHES AT WORLD JUNIORS

Kyla Grigg of Calgary and Ruchika Kumar of Oakville, Ont., both 16, won their opening matches Tuesday in the consolation draw at the women’s world junior squash championships. Grigg upset Dagmar Feddern of Denmark 9-3, 9-4, 9-7. Feddern was a seeded player in the main draw who was eliminated in her second round match Monday.

"I think she was still feeling disappointed about being eliminated so early," said Grigg, also eliminated in the second round . "I felt I played one of my better matches. It was a very mental game." Kumar, the number-two ranked junior in Canada, had no trouble defeating Rosalyn Santos of Switzerland 9-0, 9-0, 9-3.

"I would have liked to have moved further on in the main draw but I have to put that aside," said Kumar, eliminated in the second round Monday after losing to ninth seed Tina Rix of England. "The girls in the consolation plate are at least my level or stronger so I still have a lot pretty tough squash ahead of me."
