USA STUN AUSTRALIA IN PENANG
In the first significant upset in the Women's World Junior Team Squash Championship in Malaysia, fifth seeds USA beat fourth seeds Australia 2/1 in today's (Tuesday) final qualifying matches in Penang to take top position in Pool D. Few had given the US a chance of beating the talented Aussies - thought by some as title-contenders - but a combination of nerves from the Australian number one and tremendous determination from US third string Ali Pearson made for an historic and well-deserved victory.

The crunch match was poised at one-all when Pearson, a second round casualty in last week's individual event, came on to face Australia's Kasey Brown, the only unseeded player to make the individual quarter-finals. Brown raised Aussie hopes when she took the opening game, but Pearson fought back to take a 2-1 lead, before Brown then drew level. In a totally focussed performance by the US hero, Pearson ultimately ran the promising Kasey Brown into the ground to clinch a memorable 6-9 9-5 9-5 4-9 9-1 victory.

The USA squad's reward is quarter-final clash with 8th seeds New Zealand, who beat Canada 2-1 today to secure second place in Pool A, while the disconsolate Australian squad will face event favourites and hosts Malaysia. Second seeds England cruised to a 3-0 win over 7th seeds India without conceding a single game to head Pool B.

The four-times winners also benefited from a favourable draw, in which third seeds and defending champions Egypt were placed in the top half, giving England a potentially easier route through to their fourth successive final.

Egypt crushed Singapore 3-0 to finish at No1 in Pool C, while the runners-up slot went to 6th seeds Germany who overcame 11th seeds Switzerland 2-1 after Swiss No1 Manuela Zehnder beat her German opponent Kathrin Rohrmuller 9-6 9-0 9-5.

The full line-up for Thursday's quarter-finals (after a rest day on Wednesday) will be: [1] Malaysia v [4] Australia; [3] Egypt v [7] India; [5] USA v [8] New Zealand; [2] England v [6] Germany.
