20 July 2001 WORLD SQUASH NEWS RESULTS: Semi-finals: [1] Nicol David (MAS)
bt [3] Jenny Duncalf (ENG) 9-1 9-1 9-3 (19m) STAGE SET FOR DREAM WORLD JUNIORS
FINAL The first ever world junior final between two teenagers boasting senior rankings in the WISPA world top thirty will undoubtedly make up for the local fans' disappointment at not seeing an all-Malaysian clash. Egypt's Omneya Abdel Kawy prevented this when she beat Malaysia's fourth seed Tricia Chuah, from Selangor, 9-3 10-8 9-1 in the opening match on the showcourt surrounded by enthusiastic local fans cheering for the underdog. Kawy, just 15, has been taking time off recently to catch up on school exams in hometown Cairo, but reproduced the same skills which saw her take out Chuah en-route to winning the British Junior Open U-19 title in January - at a time when previous title-holder Nicol David was herself concentrating on schoolwork. The remarkable 17-year-old Nicol David from Penang, now just one step away from becoming the first player to successfully defend the women's world junior title, needed just 19 minutes to crush England's 3rd seed Jenny Duncalf, the European Junior Champion, 9-1 9-1 9-3 in the other semi-final. David, the Asian senior and junior champion who became the youngest ever winner of a WISPA tournament when she clinched the Finnish Open title in February 2000, has now conceded just 14 points over six matches in these championships. David and Kawy first played each other in the final of the British Junior U-14 Open in January 1997, when the 13-year-old Malaysian prevailed against the 11-year-old Egyptian. The pair then met on the WISPA World Tour in February 2000, when David was again successful in the quarter-finals of the Danish Open - a week before her historic triumph in Finland.
