Team Pools reports: Martin Bronstein - Quarters and Semis

TRICIA Chuah put up a terrific display to clinch the winning point in Malaysia's 2-1 win over Australia in an exciting quarterfinal tie of the world junior women's team event at the Penang International Squash Centre in Bukit Dumbar yesterday.

Malaysia will face defending champions Egypt at the Penang International Sports Arena's court in Relau today at 4pm. It is a repeat of their semifinal showdown in Antwerp, Belgium in 1999 which Egypt won.

And it was Tricia who made it possible for Malaysia to take a step nearer to their title dream when she downed Australia's Amelia Pittock 9-4, 7-9, 9-5, 9-1 in a tense 35minute duel. But at times, the unpredictable Tricia gave the Malaysian camp some anxious moments with numerous unforced errors.

This was evident in the second game when she allowed Amelia to level the score and the Australian snatched the lead in the next at 5-2. Tricia, however, recovered well to put Malaysia back in the lead at 2-1 before finishing off a spent Amelia with a swift 9-1 win in just four minutes.

Later, Tricia paid tribute to the crowd for giving her the muchneeded support. Reigning two-time world junior champion Nicol David had earlier put Malaysia ahead when she defeated Lisa Camilleri 9-1, 9-1, 9-0. Australia levelled the score at 1-1 when Georgina Davis stopped the inexperienced Teng Ooiean 5-9, 9-4, 9-4, 9-1.

But Tricia brought back the smiles for the top seeds and her performance earned praise from chief coach S. Maniam. The order of play for today's semifinal is 2-1-3. This means Tricia will play first followed by Nicol and third singles player, Ooiean, should Maniam maintain the same lineup. Egypt, however, are expected to parade the same linrup — Amna El Tarabolsy playing Tricia, Omneya Abdel Kawy meeting Nicol and Sara Badr against Ooiean.

Earlier, second seeds England easily booked their semifinal ticket by blanking Germany 3-0.
