NICOL DAVID SWITCHES FROM DUNLOP TO HEAD
Nicol David, who has played under Dunlop Sport sponsorship for most of her junior career and burgeoning WISPA career, has signed a two-year deal to play with Head rackets with major local conglomerate Mulpha Sports. Mulpha is the distributor for Head in Malaysia. Mulpha Sports is a trading subsidiary of the deep-pocketed Real Estate Development, civil engineering, and Trading Conglomerate, Mulpha International Bhd.

Mulpha International, the developer of many major office buildings and development tracts in Malaysia, has the resources to support Nicol David's efforts on the WISPA tour. The sponsorship deal was signed barely 48 hours before she opened her title defence in the Junior Worlds in Malaysia. Mulpha was represented by its director Denis Low at the signing ceremony. A serious assault on the WISPA tour is the logical next step for David, after her play this week in the World Juniors.

DEAL WILL ALLOW NATIONAL ASSOCIATION TO SUPPORT OTHER FLEDGLING STARS
Malaysia, one of the rising stars in squash, has a number of players emerging at the top levels from the junior ranks. This deal will help the association, that supports Nicol's tournament appearances, to use some of its funding to support other stars.

"Travelling and playing in the WISPA Grand Prix is very demanding and costly. With Mulpha's contribution, the burden on Nicol, her family, the Malaysian National Sports Council and the national association will be reduced," Squash Rackets Association of Malaysia executive director Wong Ah Jit told the Malaysian Star newspaper today.

SPONSORSHIP JOCKEYING AT MAJOR EVENTS
At international events of this stature, jockeying amongst racket manufacturers for sponsorship of the emerging stars can become intense. Over the past two years time, most of the ground gained has been achieved by the aggressive and successful programs launched by Dunlop Sports. So this shift is an important one for the Head brand --- and with Nicol Davids extremely positive and marketable image, its a stake for the future.

Realistically, with the level of support implied (although not revealed) in the Mulpha announcement neither Dunlop nor any other manufacturer would have been a serious alternative.
