FIRST DAY RESULTS ARE POSTED ON DRAW PAGES

The luck of the Irish deserted them on the opening day of the 9th World Junior Women's Squash Championships. Tanya Owens led 2-1 against Malaysia's Lim Yoke Wah but was caught out by an inspired spell from her 16-year-old opponent and after 45 minutes, the 9-3, 6-9, 7-9, 9-1, 9-3 scoreline had the locals cheering loudly.

Emma Toolan did very well to recover from a two game deficit against Australia's Jemma Saxby. The Irish lass looked to have gained the momentum in the decider where she served at 8-6. She couldn't find the point that mattered and Saxby escaped with a 9-7, 9-5, 3-9, 4-9, 10-8 victory after 44 minutes.

The three Eygptian players in action today, el Tarabsy, Maged, and Walily, advanced quickly losing collectively a total of 17 points in their three matches.

Also advancimg in straight games, from the Americas, were Jacqui Inward from Canada, Diana Huerta Acosta from Mexico, and the explosive Nicolette Fernandes from Guyana.

Anne-Christine Lajoie from Quebec advanced by default.

storm, with about half of the total draw gaining byes into the second round. Getting byes were all of the seeded players as well as all players in the top and bottom quarters of the draw.

This included all of the American entrants. Neither of the two top seeds Nicol David from Malaysia or Omneya Abdel Kawy from Egypt were in action today. They created interest off-court, however, as Omneya announced to the press today that she was fully ready to take on Nicol David, "any time, any place."

Four Malaysians advanced today. These included, Sahar Jasmina, Teng Ooi Ean, Lim Yohe Wah, and June Tiong. To offset those wins, three Malaysians lost today, none of whom are members of the top-rated Malaysia team. Falling before a home crowd were Delia Arnold, who lost to highly-rated Vaidihi Reddy from India, Jo Anne Jee, who lost to England's Sarah Bowles, Siti Munirah who lost to Kasey Brown of Australia, and Nabillia Ariffin who lost to highly rated Connie Choi of Hong Kong.
